Achieve reliable and repeatable color for backlit displays, lightboxes, illuminated graphics, and other transmissive printing applications. Barbieri spectrophotometers provide automated transmission measurement for ICC profiling and color quality control under defined backlit viewing conditions.

Backlit Printing

Reliable color under backlit viewing conditions

Backlit printing includes lightboxes, illuminated retail graphics, airport displays, exhibition systems, backlit textiles, films, and acrylic applications. The final color appearance depends on the printed material, ink layers, white ink configuration, backing, light source, and viewing condition.

For applications viewed with light passing through the print, transmission measurement provides the spectral data required for profiling and objective color evaluation under defined conditions.

The Spectro LFP qb and Spectro Swing qb combine automated reflection and transmission measurement in a single instrument. This supports profiling and color quality workflows for transparent, translucent, and backlit printing materials.

Automated chart measurement and integration with leading RIP and Color Management solutions help improve profiling efficiency and measurement repeatability.

What Makes Color Control in Backlit Printing Difficult

Measurement must match the viewing condition

A backlit print can appear different when viewed in reflection and when illuminated from behind. The appropriate measurement method depends on whether the final application is evaluated in reflection, transmission, or both. Transmission measurement is essential when profiling output for defined backlit viewing conditions.

Tonal gradation and density under illumination

Backlighting influences perceived density, contrast, shadow detail, highlights, and smooth tonal transitions. Accurate transmission measurement helps characterize how the complete print construction behaves when illuminated.

Color consistency across multiple panels

Large backlit installations may consist of multiple panels that are viewed side by side under the same illumination. Spectral measurement and defined production tolerances help improve consistency between panels, batches, printers, and production runs.

Where Color Measurement Fits in Your Backlit Printing Workflow

01

Material and process characterization

Measure the color behavior of each printer, ink set, print mode, substrate, white ink configuration, backing, and illumination condition as the basis for accurate profiling.

02

ICC profile creation in transmission

Print and automatically measure profiling charts in transmission to create ICC profiles for defined backlit printing and illumination conditions.

03

Production quality control

Measure control charts or representative production samples at defined intervals to identify color deviations and verify consistency between panels, batches, and production runs.

Barbieri Instruments
04

Color measurement documentation

Document measured results for production records, quality assurance, customer approval, and comparison with defined panel to panel tolerances.
